Early Wildfire Detection for the Tahoe Basin
Wildfire is one of the greatest threats to Tahoe’s communities, environment, and economy. AlertTahoe began with a simple idea: use innovative technology to detect fires earlier and give first responders better information when every minute matters.
Today, a network of high-definition cameras provides real-time situational awareness across the Tahoe Basin, helping firefighters identify and respond to emerging threats.
From Tahoe Pilot to National Innovation
AlertTahoe began as an innovative pilot led by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, in partnership with Tahoe Prosperity Center, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, El Dorado National Forest, and other regional partners.
Tahoe Prosperity Center helped build community support and mobilize private investment to expand the camera network around the Basin.
What started in Tahoe helped demonstrate the potential of camera-based wildfire detection and contributed to the development of ALERTWildfire, a network that has since expanded across the western United States.
Continuing to Innovate
The work doesn’t stop with cameras. Tahoe Prosperity Center continues to bring together research, technology, utility, public-safety, and community partners to explore the next generation of wildfire detection and communications infrastructure for the Tahoe Basin.
Our role is what TPC does best: connecting partners, resources, and innovative ideas to move promising solutions from concept to implementation.
